Salaried GPs
Many GPs now work in salaried positions. This can be in a practice, or for a PCT. It can be their main employment or part of a portfolio of jobs. The mode of employment, whether self-employed or employed, is not what determines the role undertaken. Many medical managers are salaried despite taking on a high level of responsibility and 'ownership' of service management. Instead it is important that the role required or sought is defined. If a practice is taking on a salaried GP, does the practice want them to undertake a role in financial management, or managing an aspect of the service. If the practice is looking for this then by discussing this with applicants, the suitability of the job for those applicants may become clearer. An applicant looking to reamain exclusively clinical needs to apply for roles where this is the job. Only by getting better at expressing our needs and negotiating them will we increase the quality of salaried GP posts.
GPs on the Wirral have meetings through the year if there are any you would like people to know about please let us know. In addition if there is anything you think could be of use please email us on news@wirralgp.org.uk.
